'HIS ACHIEVEMENT HAS BEEN EXPCEPTIONAL": PRIME MINISTER DAVID CAMERON LEADS TRIBUTES TO SIR ALEX FERGUSON

Prime Minister David Cameron has led the tributes to Britain's most successful football manager Sir Alex Ferguson who announced his retirement after 27 years in charge of Manchester United.

Mr Cameron took to Twitter as news broke of Sir Alex's decision to step down at the end of the season describing his footballing achievements as 'exceptional'.
Sir Alex won 49 trophies, including 13 Premier League titles during his time in charge at Old Trafford.

But the Prime Minister, an Aston Villa fan, joked that he hopes his favoured team might stand more of a chance of winning some silverware with Sir Alex retired.
He tweeted: 'Sir Alex Ferguson's achievement at #MUFC has been exceptional. Hopefully his retirement will make life a little easier for my team #AVFC.'

News of Sir Alex's retirement after his side's final game of the season against West Brom on May 18 - his 1,500th game in charge - saw politicians, former players and rival managers rush to compliment him on an outstanding career.
Labour leader Ed Miliband said that Sir Alex - a staunch Labour supporter - will 'never be forgotten'.

He tweeted: 'Proud man. Great manager. Staunch Labour Party supporter. Sir Alex will never be forgotten.'
The Labour leader told reporters at Westminster that Sir Alex was a 'huge asset' to the country.

Mr Miliband said: 'Alex Ferguson was a brilliant and inspirational manager for Manchester United. I think he teaches us the importance of teamwork, of dedication and commitment.
'Whether you are a Manchester United fan or not, I think everybody will wish him well.
'He is not only an asset to Manchester United, but a huge asset to the country.'
